Start with your pattern's recommended needle size
Every knitting or crochet pattern will specify a needle size. This is your starting point — but it's not always your final answer. Why? Because of tension (also called gauge).
What is gauge, and why does it matter?
Gauge is the number of stitches and rows per 10cm of fabric. It determines whether your finished project will be the right size, have the right drape, and feel the way it should. Knit too tight and your fabric will be stiff and small. Knit too loose and it'll be floppy and oversized.
