This shawl was created due to the yarn. Fiori Winter Sunrise just screamed this design out to me. Of course you can use what you want.

This is a shawl created with shadow knitting. The sunset over the water looks great as the rays hit the top of the shawl

The yarn I used in the shawl pictured was 4 ply Fiori Sock yarn (80% Australian Hand Dyed Merino and 20% Nylon). this makes a thinner smaller shall perfect for those warmer summer evenings.

Colours I used:

  • Winter Sunrise (the light colour)
  • Midnight Blue

The great things about these designs is you can use 4ply or 8ply (never tried 12ply!!!). Measurements will be different:

  • 4ply - Measurements will be around 1.5m across the long edge, 65cm from long edge to tip. You will need approximately 135g (540 metres) of each colour. I used 4 skeins in total (2 each colour) of 100g yarn, with some left over. Recommend 3.5 mm needles
  • 8ply - Measurements will be around 2m across the long edge, 85cm form long edge to tip. You will need approximately 350g (700 metres) of each colour. I used 8 skeins in total (4 of each colour), with some left over. Recommend 3mm needles.

Of course you can use any two colours with a contrast. Check out our yarn store for this and other colours and yarns (subject to availability).

We also produce kits (yarn and pattern) from time to time which are great as a gift, or a treat for yourself. See out kits page to see what we have in stock. If there is a specific colours you would like in your kit, please contact us and we will arrange for you (subject to stock availability).

Shadow knitting involves knit and purl, there is no actual colour work or floats to content with. It can be easily completed by any level of knitter, even if your a beginner.

The Pattern: The pattern has information, general instruction on colour choice and even if you want to change the shape of the shawl. There are written instruction or a chart to follow, which ever you prefer. With this design we give you a repeat of the pattern and hoe you use it.

Stitches: Knit, Purl, Cast on (8 stitches), Cast off (8 stitches). Edging, which you make as you knit the shawl, requires you to knit two together and yarn overs.
